Celeron, NY was Lucille Ball’s hometown. Famous for the hit television sitcom I Love Lucy, she wiggled her way into Ameican hearts everywhere! She was so much adored that Celeron commissioned a statue to honor the television star…but shortly after being unveiled, locals gave it the nickname “Scary Lucy.” Take a look at this thing…we agree! The original sculptor, Dave Poulin, had been petitioning the city to re-do the sculpture for years. “From the day of its installation, I have shared my disappointment in the final outcome and have always believed it to be by far my most unsettling sculpture, not befitting of Lucy’s beauty or my ability as a sculptor.”
But the city decided to contract a new sculpture from Carolyn D. Palmer instead. The new statue features the actress in a more iconic way, with a polka dot dress and a hairstyle that fits her character. She still wears the signature pearls, but this masterpiece was definitely worth the wait!
The life-sized bronze statue was revealed on what would have been Lucille Ball’s 105th birthday! Fans think that she would have been proud of the statue.
Petitioners were hoping to completely get rid of Scary Lucy, but the city is planning to move it to a different area of the park instead. The differences between the two statues is almost unbelievable! No wonder the original artist wanted to try and re-do the statue. Yikes. What do you think about New Lucy and Scary Lucy? Thanks to that Facebook group, this park has a brand new Lucy!
