In Strasburg, Virginia, the police department of this small town is trying something revolutionary. Instead of forcing their residents to fork over hard-earned money to pay for their parking violations, the Strasburg PD is allowing them to donate 10 canned food items instead. All of the donations taken from Monday, September 12, 2016, until December 31, 2016, will be given to the Compassion Cupboard of Strasburg.Residents are ecstatic about the policy – even if it is temporary – and have a lot to say about it.
I’ve always considered most tickets [to be] just another way to collect taxes. This way a ticket turns into a blessing for someone.” Gregory P. commented.
The sentiment has a lot of people wanting to donate regardless of having been issued a ticket, and the department instructs those interesting to drop off their canned goods at the Strasburg town hall.
I’ll look for an illegal parking spot this week!” Says a resident. Although that may not be what the department was hoping for as a result!
Many more people have chimed in wishing that their towns would do this, too. Once a year, even if it was just for a week, would make a huge difference for individuals and families trying to get through the tough winter months. The temporary policy also brought up the discussion of where the money collected from tickets goes in the first place and why more towns don’t employ this sort of creative punishments in the first place.
What do YOU think of this town’s new idea?
