Shopping for new clothes is the best. Sure, it can be stressful, but having something new to wear can make us feel powerful and confident. Many people, it turns out, wear their new clothes almost immediately after buying them. Without washing them first, they rip off tags and put them on, going to work or parties or social events and loving every minute of it.
But what they didn’t know is that by not washing their new clothes (or having them dry cleaned), they are inviting thousands of germs directly onto their bodies and into their homes, cars, and their friends’ homes.
Think about it. How many items did you touch, pick up, shuffle, and try on before putting them back and deciding on one? Dozens of people did that same thing to the item you purchased. Not to mention the countless others who handled the garment during production, shipping, displaying, and organizing!
And if all of that isn’t enough to convince you, the chemicals and resins left behind in the clothing from the manufacturing process should be. If we wear these items, sweat in them, and breathe the air around them, particles from these substances end up in our systems. Irritants, rashes, and sometimes fever can occur after wearing a new garment.
It’s hard for some of us to rationalize washing new clothing because “it’s new – it hasn’t gotten dirty yet!” While it may not be sweat in the clothing, there are a lot of other germs and chemicals just waiting to hitch a ride on your skin!
