Ever since we were kids, our parents would tell us to “follow the rules.” We didn’t always question them, and we were punished when we didn’t listen to what they said. However, we are also supposed to ask questions and find out why we do things the way that we do. Although obedience and being a law abiding citizen is the ideal way for a society to function, people are also expected to think for themselves because following orders blindly can be just as bad as not following them at all. It’s a fine line, and it’s hard to truly pinpoint. But this story puts the entire issue into a new perspective.
What do you think about the conclusion of this experiment? I think the point that we should all take from this experiment is that it is easy to justify our actions when “everyone else is doing it,” even if it’s not a healthy thing to be doing. Choosing to do the right thing is hard, but to these monkeys, the lines were quickly blurred when no one could communicate or ask questions. Like the conclusion says, “think before you follow.”
