Before Meryl Streep was hailed as the “best actress of her generation,” she faced harsh criticism. She aspired to be an actress, but she was nervous about her looks. This fear came true in a terrible way when she went in to audition for a major role in King Kong. She had met the producer’s son who saw her talent immediately after watching her in a play. When the producer, Dino De Laurentiis, saw her walk into his large Manhattan office, he chastised his son and said loudly in Italian:
Why do you bring me this ugly thing?”
What he didn’t know was that Meryl was fluent in Italian. With a grace that she would soon become known for, she replied and put them in their place…even if they didn’t give her the part.
I understand what you’re saying. I’m sorry I’m not beautiful enough to be in King Kong.”
She left the audition very sobered. Her looks had been a concern for a while, but hearing one of the top producers in Hollywood put it so blatantly was awful. Instead, she vowed not to let her “looks” stop her from following her dreams. Failing is all a part of life, and in acting, that is even more true. She took her insecurities and ran with them, building an acting career that spanned several decades. She has won 2 Emmy’s, 8 Golden Globes, and 3 Oscars for her incredible performances. If she had listened to Dino De Laurentiis, she never would have made it. If she had given up, there is no telling what would have happened to her. Take a page from Meryl’s book. Never give up on your dreams, no matter who tells you that you aren’t good enough!
