Rosemary lives in England. Edith lives in Australia. When Rosemary was just 9-years-old, she wrote a letter and sent it over 10,000 miles to a continent that she had only heard of at school.
Rosemary’s friend at school had a pen pal, and in the 1960’s, it was just the thing to do! It was a way to connect with other people and correspond with a stranger who would soon become a friend. She began writing to Edith when she was only 9, and Edith was 12.
Most pen friends might write back and forth for a year or two, but eventually, most of them stop. They receive a letter and intend to sit down and write one back…but just never find the time. Just like that, the friendship can die. But surprisingly, the two never stopped.
They were kindred souls who grew up together through the written word. Letter after letter, and later, gift after gift was exchanged between the two women. They grew up together.
They shared the excitement of falling in love, getting married, and having children. They experienced the heartbreak of divorce, and then the new-found excitement when they both ended up getting married for a second time.
For over half a century, the women wrote to each other. When the internet became widespread, they switched to emails but still sent gifts to one another.
So when Rosemary was turning 60, Edit just had to come. She flew in from Australia in order to celebrate the milestone with her long-time friend, and the two met face to face for the very first time…and they couldn’t have gotten along better! It was as if they had known each other all of their lives…and in a sense, they had.
