There Are NO Red Pixels In This Picture And It Is Freaking People Out!

Feel like getting angry at your own brain today? This picture of strawberries contains a lot of different colors, but none of them are red. The blue-tinged picture is driving people nuts because their brain interprets the contrasting colors as red because strawberries are red and it just expects them to be that way. Take a good hard look at the picture…and then scroll down to see what color these strawberries actually are!  Get ready to have your mind blown! Created by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a professor at Ritsumeikan University in Japan who specializes in optical illusions, the picture is just as aggravating as it seems.

He is exploiting a phenomenon known as color constancy, a crazy process used by your brain to color-correct the world when the light is different.

Your brain says, ‘the light source that I’m viewing these strawberries under has some blue component to it, so I’m going to subtract that automatically from every pixel.’ And when you take grey pixels and subtract out this blue bias, you end up with red.” Explains Bevil Conway, an expert on visual perception from the National Eye Institute.

It seems red, but when you compare the color to white…you’ll see that it is actually gray! How crazy is this? Your brain tells you that it should be red, even when it isn’t. Did this optical illusion work for you?
