Were you looking for baby names to avoid next year? I grew up with a very common name, and as a result, I avoided choosing any names on the “top names” lists for my kids. Sure, you name is pretty, but if you’re one of 32 kids with the same name in your graduating class, it can get old really quickly. Some interesting choices are on the rise, and some of them are downright nerdy!
So let’s start with the top 20 most common names for girls in 2015!

- Ava
- Mia

There are some classic names on that list! I like them.
But here’s where things get a little bit…crazy! With social media usage on the rise, young moms are finding inspiration everywhere when it comes to naming their newborns, and you’ll probably start meeting little boys and girls with names like these in the next few years…
These names…are filters on Instagram. What does that mean? It’s a way to change the colors, saturation, or tint of a picture online. The names of these filters have somehow become the names for new babies! Don’t be surprised if you start hearing mom call for little “Rise” to get down off of the monkey bars soon!

Another surprising trend? Moms are naming their kids after the TITLES of royals. Not naming them after a royal family, mind you. The titles themselves.

And last but not least, if you have been paying attention to books and movies, these baby name trends tend to rise and fall with the popularity of young adult fiction.

The phenomenon of rising and falling baby names is quite impressive. While we can’t always pinpoint exactly why certain names rise and fall at the same times, the ones that we can attribute to actual events, movies, or books never ceases to amaze me. Would you choose a name for your child off of one of these lists, or are you content to stick with the classics?
