Signing a contract with anyone can be a little nerve-wracking. By signing on the dotted line, you are agreeing to everything stated in the contract, which is why it is so important to read it first! Most of the time, we skim the contract and sign anyway, assuming that the company or store won’t pull anything shady…but what happens when we try to pull something on the company?!
This land lord gave his tenants the lease to look over and sign before renting out a place to live…but his mistake was sending the lease in a Word format, and not a PDF. Word documents are easily edited, while a PDF is not. So these guys decided to edit their lease before signing and sending it back, certain that the guy wouldn’t read it before accepting it.
My lease came as a Word file instead of PDF. I made a slight change before signing it.”
Lessor shall provide birthday cake for Lessee(s) on the weekend closest to their birthdays, which are June 7th and February 17th. Vanilla cake is not acceptable.”
Altering a lease like this is not legal in most states…and if the guy decides that it wasn’t a hilarious joke, he might end up taking them to court and getting them into trouble. Hopefully, this guy has a sense of humor and won’t do anything…except maybe send them a fruit cake! Everybody hates fruit cake.
