Single Mother Teaches Her Son How To Care For The House Because Chores Are Not “Just For Women”

Nikkole Paulun frequently shares parenting tips and advice on her Facebook page, but one recent revelation has thousands of people weighing in on the discussion. She posted three pictures of her 6-year-old, Lyle, learning how to do basic household chores. She taught him the safest way to make a grilled cheese sandwich, the proper way to load the dishwasher, and how to do laundry.

I teach my son to cook & do household chores. Why? Because household work isn’t just for women. Because one day he might be a single man, living on his own, who will actually know how to do laundry & not eat take out every night.” She wrote.

She may not have expected her post to go viral, but she is glad that more parents are able to see her point.

10-17a1As a single mom with two children, Paulun knows that her kids will look up to her to teach them everything – from changing a tire to mopping the floors – and it hasn’t come without criticism for making her son “work too hard.” Mom insists that Lyle received some well-deserved video game time after he learned how to finish up the laundry.10-17a2So, why is she doing all of this in the first place?

Because I live in a generation of people who complain that school didn’t teach us how to cook, do laundry, tie a tie, or pay taxes. Remember parents, a man who believes he shouldn’t have to cook or do chores was once a boy who was never taught any better.”

What do you think of this mom’s method of teaching her children about chores?
