“Heaven” is one of those vague concepts that kids don’t fully understand right away. There is no physical proof that it exists, and teaching such an abstract concept to a child who only really cares about snack time at church can be a bit more difficult than you might imagine. Moms and dads might say something like “you need to be good so that you can get into heaven,” as a last-ditch effort to get their kids to behave in church. Some people might use “heaven” to explain where their recently deceased pet fish went after he stopped swimming around in the tank. This teacher had her work cut out for her with this group of kids!
You know, he’s not wrong, and I nearly spit out my coffee when I read that punchline. This is probably one of the kids that learned about heaven when his pet Skippy had to be taken to the vet one last time. Kids understand the world so much differently than adults, and as we grow up and learn new things, we tend to forget how we learned all of these things in the first place. I’m sure at one point, we all thought that heaven was just a place for old people and goldfish. I wonder how she managed not to laugh when he said this in class!
