As much as we would all love to think that we know the people around us, sometimes stories like this pop up and really put our lives into perspective. This girl went to the neighbor’s home every day instead of an after-school daycare. She thought it was safe. Her parents thought it was safe. Even the other neighbors on the block thought it was safe…until one day, she caught the neighbors doing THIS to their child!
My parent’s worked full time so I stayed with a neighbor after school until they got home.
My neighbor had two daughters: 6 and 10 at the time. The 6 year old was my best friend and we played in her front yard mostly because her mother hated noise in the house.
One day it was raining so we were playing upstairs. I guess we were too loud, because the mother had the girl go out back and pull a switch from a bush.
I came into the kitchen to my friend bent over a chair, getting wailed on with a branch – bloody marks down her back and legs.
Our parents never hit us as kids, so I freaked. I went back upstairs and called 911, as you’re told to do in an emergency when you’re 7.
I told the operator what was happening and he sent a squad car out. Child services visited the house regularly after that.
I was never allowed over to play again, and my parents were pissed about having to dip into savings for an after school babysitter.
But 20 years later, I’m still proud of myself for trying to stop a violent attack on a six year old.
After sharing this story online, many people pointed out that her parents probably weren’t angry at having to pay for a babysitter. She decided to find out the rest of the story because at 7-years-old, she may have remembered it very differently from her parents.
I called my mom for her input on this story, and she said after I explained the severity of the abuse that they were proud of me for calling the authorities. She said she made an anonymous call to child protective services the next day as a follow up. My parents would never place babysitter money over a child’s safety, and I’m glad to have her part of the story now too.”
Obviously, some people have very different views on what “discipline” should entail…but we can all agree that drawing blood from a 6-year-old is NEVER acceptable! This little girl had the right idea, and I’m glad she was able to get the other side of the story after all!
