I’m guilty of losing my car in the parking lot on more than one occasion. I come in one entrance and exit out of another and suddenly I have no idea where I am. Thank goodness that most cars have those little buttons on the key chain that make noise to tell you where you’ve parked! This woman’s problem turned out to be a little more complicated…
I will admit, I have a habit of being a little forgetful when it comes to directions and details. I was coming out of a hotel and I was looking for my car keys. They were not in my pockets and my purse didn’t make that familiar “jingling” sound when I shook it. They weren’t there. I ran back inside to the meeting room and they weren’t there.
Suddenly I realized that I must have left them in the car. I knew my husband would be mad at me for locking them in again. He had been so sick of getting that phone call from me that I was dreading admitting to him that I had done it again. I must have left them in the ignition…what if the car had been stolen?! I immediately rushed to the parking lot and I came to a terrifying conclusion: The parking lot was empty.
I immediately called the police and reported that my car had been stolen. I gave them my location, a description of the car, the name of the hotel, and I confessed that I had left my keys in the car.
Then I made the most difficult phone call next…to my husband.
“Honey,” I stammered; I always call him “honey” in times like these and I could almost feel him sigh through the phone. “I left my keys in the car, and it was stolen…”
There was a period of silence. I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard his voice. “Honey,” he said in a voice that I knew meant he was trying to hold in his anger. “I dropped you at the hotel!”
Now it was my time to be silent. How could I have forgotten?! Embarrassed and feeling like an idiot, I begged him to just come and get me.
That didn’t help. “I will, honey, as soon as I convince this policeman that I have not stolen your car!!”
I can almost feel her embarrassment! Can you imagine forgetting something this important?! I bet she’ll make a huge apology dinner when she finally gets home! I hope they got it straightened out quickly…but this entire situation sounds like something I would do. Yikes!
