With all of the negativity floating around in the news, far too often we find ourselves overlooking the truly incredible things that happen because something “outrageous” happened at the same time. This isn’t as VIRAL as a gorilla or a politician…but it should be. Take this story to heart because this teacher is literally saving lives.
Brittni Darras teaches school in Colorado Springs and firmly believes that “to the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.”
Her daughter- a friendly, intelligent, beautiful, driven, young woman- not only planned to commit suicide, but was in the act of doing so when the police got a Safe 2 Tell report, broke in, and stopped her.”
One of her students attempted suicide. If one student could do something so permanent and drastic, what if there were more in her classroom? What if she could do something to make them feel like they mattered? What if any one of them would be the next to try and end their lives?
She had deleted her social media accounts and left goodbye letters; she was ready to leave the world.”
She sat down and wrote a letter to each student that passed through her classroom. Personalized with little anecdotes, she let each child know that they mattered. Each word they spoke and thing they did mattered, and if they left the world, they would be missed.
I spent the next 2 months writing cards to every one of my students- over 100 of them- telling each one what is special and unique about them.”
Take a minute and think about the people in your life. When is the last time you told them that you appreciated them? A letter might do a world of good…and have a bigger impact than you might imagine!
