She Forgot Her Benefits Card At Home And Didn’t Realize It Until The Check-Out Line. This Woman Overheard.

Many people use electronic benefits cards to spend their food and cash benefits issued by the states to help supplement their monthly paychecks, but when one woman realized that she had left it at home, it meant that she would have to leave everything at the counter and come back another day.

Jill Z. had spent her morning making the trip to the grocery store after taking the public bus and budgeting her purchases, but when she got to the check-out line, her EBT card wasn’t in her wallet. The cashier offers to hold Jill’s purchases for the day, but Jill knew that trying to rely on the bus and make it back to the store on time just wouldn’t be possible. That’s when the lady behind her asks what was wrong.

The cashier stepped in to explain, but the woman just looked at Jill and asked a question that stunned her:

Can I pay for your groceries?” The stranger asked.

Jill hesitated – was it a joke?

I could see the compassion in her eyes and I really did need the food. I asked her several times, ‘Are you sure? It’s a lot of money.’ She insisted and I said I’d do it on one condition… she let me give her a hug. She gave me a warm hug and I thanked her very much over and over again, tears welling in my eyes.” Jill wrote.

She took a picture of the woman for two reasons. The first, to remind herself of the woman’s generosity. The second, to share the woman’s selfless actions with the world.

Jill hopes that the woman will see how much her actions meant to her that day and know that Jill is incredibly thankful.
