Pit Bull Abandoned In Crack House Becomes Beloved FDNY Firehouse Dog!

Ashley the pit bull was discovered in an abandoned crack house in New York covered in cigarette burns and severely malnourished. In the middle of January, the dog was locked in the home without food, water, or heating for at least two days. The dog was recovered when Erica Mahnken and her fiance, Michael Favor, received an anonymous call to let them know about the dog.

We didn’t ask any questions when the person called us and told us the dog was alone,” Mahnken said. “It was freezing out. There was nothing in the house. No, we didn’t think about it — we just ran and got her and said we’ll figure out what we were going to do after we got her out of there.”

The pair, along with their friend, Lara Ribeiro, started a foster-based rescue called No More Pain Rescue. Since it was such a last-minute call, they didn’t have any place to keep the dog. They called some friends at their nearby firehouse, and the firefighters agreed to take care of Ashley temporarily…

…But three days later, they called the rescue and told them that they wanted to adopt the pit bull that had come to them so suddenly!

My heart wants to explode,” Mahnken said. “Everyone’s so quick to judge a dog, especially a dog you don’t know where it came from or what kind of person they are and what kind… It is very satisfying.”

They’ve started calling her “Ash,” and she even has a favorite spot on the fire truck!
