Little Sophia had earned a reward for doing something important: she had learned to use the potty and was now 100% potty trained! Her parents, Brandi and Nick, had given her extra incentive to learn by telling her that she could choose a special prize if she lasted an entire month of using the potty. She went to the store and was excited to choose her prize! But when they got to the check-out line, her mother was furious over the comments made by the elderly cashier.
…the cashier asked Sophia if she was going to a birthday party. We both gave her a blank stare. She then pointed to the doll and asked Sophia if she picked her out for a friend. Sophia continued to stare blankly and I let the cashier know that she was a prize for Sophia being fully potty trained. The woman gave me a puzzled look and turned to Sophia and asked, ‘Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?’ “
When Sophia said ‘yes,’ the cashier went a step too far.
‘But she doesn’t look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you.’ “
Before Brandi could interrupt, Sophia explained why this particular doll was exactly like her.
Yes, she does. She’s a doctor like I’m a doctor. And I’m a pretty girl and she’s a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?’ ” Sophia explained.
Brandi was stunned and walked away from the exchange with mixed feelings. She was angry with the woman, but she was proud of her daughter for valuing others based on their own beauty – not their skin color.
This experience just confirmed my belief that we aren’t born with the idea that color matters. Skin comes in different colors just like hair and eyes and every shade is beautiful.” Brandi wrote on Facebook.
