A man from Michigan named Bob (no other name released) had left his farmhouse to bring in some firewood when the unthinkable happened. While the temperature was 24 °F, he only planned to walk a few steps to the pile of wood and back into his cozy home. Dressed in long johns, a shirt, and slippers, he couldn’t have known that he would slip and break his neck.
Not dressed for the cold, he knew that he would die soon if he didn’t get help. He began to scream, but as his nearest neighbors were a quarter mile away and 10:30 p.m., it was unlikely that they would hear him. But while no humans came to help, his dog, Kelsey, raced to his side.
The golden retriever knew just what to do. When Bob didn’t get up, she lay down on top of him, covering his body with her fur. When he began to lose consciousness, she licked his face and hands until he woke back up. The entire time, she kept barking for help.
She was letting out this screeching howl that alerted my neighbour. He found me at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day.”
When Bob arrived at the hospital, his body temperature was at 89.8 °F. A normal body temperature is 98.6 °F, and hypothermia sets in when the body’s temperature drops below 95 °F.
I knew I had to persevere through this and that it was my choice to stay alive…I was surprised to find out that I didn’t have any frost bite,” said Bob, “I am sure it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep me warm and safe.”
After the surgery on his neck, Bob was quickly able to move his extremities and gain strength, and doctors believe he will make a full recovery.
