METALLICA has millions of fans, and one group decided to try and put those numbers to good use. The Lords Of Hardwire, a group of fans from Colombia, brought the idea to the band’s attention, and it all went uphill from there!
A show at the Los Andes Stadium in Bogota attracted roughly 25,000 fans. The band asked fans to donate non-perishable food items to help feed the indigenous Wayuu community in La Guajira, a community in northern Colombia. In the last eight years alone, over 4,000 children have died of starvation, illness, and a lack of clean drinking water.
Loyal and generous fans brought in almost ten tons of food and other useful items. The Challenger Foundation, a charity geared towards fighting hunger, and Corazones Peluditos, a group of independent families that re-home and care for abandoned animals, banded together to put the donations to good use. The donations were expected, but the sheer volume of items being given was incredibly shocking.
The results of METALLICA’s concert-donations have shown others how powerful a group of fans can be. Inspiring other bands and artists to try this out at their own concerts might go a lot farther than anyone could have ever imagined! The organizations are now working furiously to transport and distribute the items and food to the children and families that can use them the most.
People are impressed, and we’ll just have to wait and see if more artists and fans try this out at their own events.
