The 65-year-old man, who works full-time as a cleaner in Bangladesh, was photographed without his knowledge. He was gazing at a display full of jewelry, but the person who took the snapshot posted it online with the horrible caption (translated):
This man deserves to only look at rubbish.” The person wrote.
But the person who posted it had no idea that the public would turn on them instantly.Hundreds of strangers wanted to track the man down and support him. In remarkable fashion, people began to work together, pinpointing the probable location, sharing the story with friends, and asking others if anyone knew who the man was.
Finally, they made a breakthrough. Using the reflection in the shop’s window, they knew exactly what street the man was photographed on in Saudi Arabia. Eventually, the man was discovered. Nazer al-Islam Abdul Karim was showered with gifts from people who had decided that he did not “only deserve to look at rubbish.”
They gave gifts of money, bags of rice, jars of honey, two smartphones, and return flights to his hometown. The shop even let him choose a set of golden chains and earrings!
I was just doing my job as a cleaner in the municipality and found myself in front of the gold shop. I am very happy about the gifts and very thankful.” He told CNN.
He had no idea that thousands of strangers were looking for him, and the donations are still pouring in. He will soon be able to return home.
