Just about 10 years ago, Enoteca Maria boasted two Italian grandmothers who ran the kitchen like they would run their own homes. Now, the restaurant employs 30 grandmothers who have come from all over the world! And while it may sound like a delicious idea, it doesn’t come without a few drawbacks.

It can get dicy,” the restaurant’s owner, Jody Scaravella, says about the kitchens. These grandmothers are used to being in charge. After raising their own children, running their own homes, and keeping grandchildren and great-grandchildren in line, they each think that they should be in charge of the restaurant’s kitchen.

Each night, the kitchen features two grandmothers, one is always Italian, and the other is always from another part of the world. The restaurant is constantly called by people making reservations. They want to know on which night they can order their favorite dish “just like mom used to make,” and they know that as soon as they arrive, the restaurant will smell like home.

The recipes used in the restaurant have been passed down for generations, and each night showcases the best ‘grandma’s secret recipe’ that customers have ever tasted. Each woman is proud to be a “nonna” at the restaurant, sharing hundreds of years of traditions for people who can’t get enough of their delicious, home-cooked meals.
