Mackenzie and Ethan were in the car with their father on a vacation to Colorado when they noticed that he was swerving. They asked him to stop the car when they realized that he was actually drunk, but he refused to.
“We told him we don’t want to go anymore because ‘you are drunk and I don’t want to die.'”
Mackenzie didn’t want to, but she drafted an S.O.S. text to send to 911. She threatened to send it if her dad didn’t pull over. He continued to swerve in and out of different lanes and the children felt unsafe. He still refused to pull over.
Mackenzie pressed ‘send.’
The dispatcher immediately replied, and asked for their location. It was difficult to track the kids down because other than “going to Colorado,” they weren’t sure how to tell anyone where they were.
Eventually, they convinced their father to stop at a Burger King for a bite to eat. That is when they were able to give the police their exact location. They stalled for time and ate slowly. Soon enough, officers arrived at the scene and detained him. His blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit.
Police also found a cup containing alcohol in the car, according to Mackenzie. Their mother came to get them, and while she was angry at the situation, she was so grateful that they were able to think quickly. They saved themselves, and they may have even saved others.
It was a hard decision for the children to make, but they knew that in the end, they made the right choice.
