It’s like some kind of unwritten law between strangers not to make eye contact or strike up a conversation unless it is absolutely necessary. Most of us have developed a “you don’t mess with me and I won’t mess with you” mentality that has only gotten stronger throughout the years. Sure, we might smile briefly when we pass uncomfortably close to someone in the elevator, but no one is about to ask them how their week is going. When we say, “how are you?” We don’t expect anything other than, “fine, thanks.” But some people seem to have been born different, and have no control over what comes out of their mouths.
These people are a gift to humanity. If it wasn’t for them, we might never talk to one another. Sure, I would never willingly turn to a stranger in the check-out line and comment on their preference in dish soap, but if someone wanted to start up a conversation about why one brand is more “sudsy,” I wouldn’t ignore them. My mother had this gift, too, and I’ve learned that a few kind words to a stranger might just make their day. It’s all a part of what makes us human. I think we can all appreciate that.
