When Gail received a letter about her 11-year-old son’s performance in school, her heart dropped. Studying is not his strongest quality, and she braced herself for what she was about to read.
Ben is autistic and tries his hardest to understand and learn like the other children do…but quite often, he doesn’t do well on his tests and projects. But this time, the letter from the school had her in tears for very different reasons!
A very important piece of information I want you to understand is that these tests only measure a little bit of you and your abilities. They are important and you have done so well but Ben Twist is made up of many other skills and talents that we at Lansbury Bridge see and measure in other ways.”
His teacher highlighted his qualities and abilities, making sure that he knew that the scores of a test did not reflect who he is as an individual and did not dictate his future. Gail was so moved that his teacher would take the time to write such a personal and touching note for her son to make him feel important.
Her son was shocked that the school thought so highly of him and had this to say when his mother asked him what he thought of the letter:
Wow. Do they really think that about me? I feel amazing.”
The letter has been retweeted thousands of times and the school wants EVERYONE to know that “tests only measure a little bit of you.” That’s the most uplifting thing I’ve read all day!
