Mark and Cindy Hill won the Powerball lottery of $300 million in November of 2012. While the money may have helped to change their lifestyle, it didn’t change their hearts. Since they received the money, they have adopted two children and started making big changes around their small hometown of 500 residents.
In 2013, the family purchased a sewage treatment plant for their town. Now, they are paying for a new fire station. This most recent donation took over a year and was inspired by the fact that Hill’s own father was rescued by volunteer firemen twice.
The station has a large training facility, radiant heating in the floors, and is energy efficient. And what is a fire station without fire trucks? He purchased several, as well as an ambulance. He wanted to make sure that the community had the help it needed in times of emergency.
The tiny community of Camden Point, Missouri will never forget the generosity of the Hill family, and the Hill family almost wishes that they would.
If my wife and I could have built this without anybody knowing that she and I were building it, that’s exactly what we would have done.”
But in a small town, news travels fast! Especially in a town that has so few residents. While most of us would make big purchases and spend the money on our wildest dreams, the Hills are a bit more down-to-Earth, and know that taking care of the people around them is the most important thing in life.
