What do you think about when you contemplate the end of your life? Most of us probably don’t like to think about what it will be like. Not knowing when your last day will be is just a normal part of being human, but this man knew that his time was coming soon. His family was grieving and preparing for his death and he was waiting for the inevitable end…until he smelled something that he hadn’t smelled in quite some time. Overcome with a sense of nostalgia, he decided that this was as good a way as any to spend his last small bit of energy…
A very old man lay dying in his bed. In death’s doorway, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs.
He gathered his remaining strength and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands.
With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen were it not for death’s agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven.
There, spread out upon newspapers on the kitchen table was literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?
Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table. The aged and withered hand, shaking, made its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife.
“Stay out of those,” she said, “they’re for the funeral!!!”
This poor old man! He only wanted to taste the delicious homemade cookies that his wife was so famous for! While it is such a typical response from a hard-working and devoted wife…maybe…just maybe…she could have made an exception? This story makes me want to make a thousand cookies and send them to him! Is one last cookie so much to ask for? Hilarious.
