It’s easy to get wrapped up in our own lives and forget about those around us. Mostly, we think that the people we care about will just always be there. Bad things never happen to us…right? They happen to people on television, they happen to friends, but they never happen to us. All it takes is one moment to remind us that life is so, so fragile. All it takes is a split second for everything to change. This man learned that the hard way.
A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. It was her birthday, but he had a few important meetings that he didn’t want to miss. He parked in a spot near the door but as he got out of his car, he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb, sobbing.
He hesitated for just a moment and saw that there was no one with her. “Are you alright?” he asked her.
“I just wanted to buy a red rose for my mother, but I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars.” She said, a few more tears falling and staining her dress.
The man smiled and said, “Come on in with me. I’ll buy you a rose.”
He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother’s flowers.
He saw that she was about to walk down the sidewalk along the busy street, so he stopped her and offered to drive her home.
She smiled at the strangers kindness and said, “Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.”
She directed him to a cemetery, and when he realized where they were going, he felt a knot in his chest. Instead of leaving the little girl, he followed her to a new grave. He mother had been gone for only a few weeks, he noticed. He watched as she dried her tears and placed the single red rose on the pristine headstone.
He dropped the child off at her new home with her aunt and uncle, explaining the situation and said goodbye to the grateful child.
The man only hesitated for a moment before he returned to the flower shop and canceled the order for shipment. Instead, he had the clerk prepare a large bouquet for travel and drove the two hundred miles to his mother’s house.
