Giving gifts to the people who matter the most in our lives is embedded in human history! Since the beginning of time – even if it was just a pretty leaf – people have exchanged presents, given each other food or objects, and marked occasions with gifts. It’s not specific to humans, either. Some species of animals and birds have adopted this practice, too.
Admittedly, humans have taken it a bit too far. We’ve created grand holidays all centered around the exchanging of presents, and in those instances, it can feel like more of an obligation than heartfelt sentiment. But in this man’s case, it was completely different. I understand his point…but I’m not sure that I agree.
He has finally seen the reason for giving gifts to the people that you love! It isn’t about the price tag. It isn’t about showing them how much you care about them with a grand, expensive gesture. Obviously, after 50+ years of marriage, she knew that he cared a great deal. It’s a small gesture that demonstrates you gratitude for everything that they do on a day-to-day basis. Even if it is just a pretty leaf, or an inexpensive box of holiday chocolates.
It truly is the thought that counts!
