Carter Blanchard, an 8-year-old boy from Arkansas felt self-conscious when his Vitiligo began to progress rapidly. He was first diagnosed in kindergarten when white patches of skin appeared around his eyes. It began to spread quickly, and Carter admitted to his mother that he hated his face.
He was at a big school with a lot of kids, and his face was transforming very quickly,” his mother, Stephanie Adcock, said. “The first thing he’d tell me when he got in the car is that he hated his face and hated the way he looked.”
But when he heard about a dog that had the same markings, he wanted to meet. Rowdy, a 13-year-old black Labrador, lived in Oregon and had been diagnosed in the same year as Carter.
His mother found the pictures and showed her son who was excited to see someone else “like him.” They reached out to the dog’s owner and started a long-distance friendship…and when the local news picked up the story, strangers began to donate for Carter and his mother to make the trip out to Oregon!
Stephanie knows in her heart that meeting another person wouldn’t have made as much of an impact on her son and is grateful for not only the support of Rowdy’s owner, but the support of complete strangers who believed in helping her son cope with his appearance.
