He Asked If She Was Going To Donate Her Purchase To The Flood Victims. “No Sir…I AM A Flood Victim…”

Allison Welch didn’t realize that it was going to be an extraordinary day. She had some errands to run and wasn’t paying attention to anything much besides checking off the things on her to-do list…but while she was standing in the check-out line at the local Wal-Mart, something caught her attention. It was such a powerful thing to witness that she immediately posted the entire thing on Facebook where it was shared thousands of times.

So I went to Walmart today in Marksville and I was third in line. There was an older woman checking out, a middle aged couple behind her, and I was next.

Well I noticed the woman checking out had almost every basic item you could need: shampoo, conditioner, tooth paste, tooth brush, hair brush, a couple of pairs of shoes, some clothes, basic make up items…. Etc…. I didn’t think anything of it but as she was almost done (her total was over $350) the man in front of me asked her ‘Are you sending this stuff to flood victims?’

And the woman in tears said, ‘Actually sir, I am a flood victim, I lost everything I own and didn’t have time to even grab my purse. There is water up to my roof. I’m staying here with my daughter until I can figure things out.’

And just like that, the man handed the cashier his credit card and paid for the woman’s things. She cried, his wife cried, and then I cried.

It was so touching to see someone be so selfless, especially in this trying time for Louisiana! Pay it forward.

The man could have simply said a small “good luck” and continued to mind his own affairs, but he didn’t. He stopped, he cared enough to ask, and then he listened. He knew that sometimes, our own comfort isn’t what is important in life. Helping others in trying times is what makes us human. We have no way of knowing if that $350 was a lot of money to him. He may have been saving it for his rent next month, or maybe that amount was small to him. We’ll never know, but the story of his actions have spread far and wide, and his kindness is inspiring others to do the same in their everyday lives.

And that is priceless.
