When is the last time you thought about your old lava lamp? Maybe you still have it in the den, or maybe it went up into the attic one day and never came back down…this nostalgic do-it-yourself project is sure to be a lot of fun! There are a few different ways to do this project, so see which method is right for you!
In both methods, you’ll need a pan with a layer of oil on the bottom. The colorful paints can be glow-in-the-dark paints or fluorescent paints that glow under a UV light. As long as the paint is water based, they will not mix into the oil of the pan.
By using a pipet or plastic straws, the kids can drip the colorful glowing paint into the oil and it will never mix! You can use this experiment to explain the science behind why the oil and water won’t mix if your kids are old enough. As long as your paint is non-toxic, the kids can touch the little beads of water and oil for a bit of messy fun!Want to turn the oil into a lava lamp? The easiest way is to simply pour the mixture into a clear bottle with a lid and watch the oil and water float all around. Will you be trying this crazy cool project at your house? The kids will love it! You can find more details on this project here!
