Towards the end of his life, his children and grand children found a nice nursing home for him to live in. There were a lot of amenities and the best of care. But there was one rule that made his life fairly dull: no alcohol.
The nursing home, like many others, did not allow alcoholic beverages or beer on the premises. The elderly and disabled people who lived there weren’t supposed to drink, anyway. But for someone to be told they couldn’t do something, it takes a hard toll on their confidence and self-esteem.
One minute, they are living free and able to live alone, and the next minute, they completely rely on others just to live.
Even the simple act of drinking a beer – something he had done thousands of times – was now off limits.
But one grandson knew all of this, and he knew his “pop-pop” deserved it. He hid his grandfather’s favorite beer past the nursing home security and found the man sitting at the front window, just watching the world pass by.
I don’t know whether to say hi to you or drink the beer!”
The old man’s eyes lit up as his grandson gave him a taste of the life he used to have.
Of course, he didn’t know it at the time, but that was the last beer the old man would ever drink, and one of the last pictures he would ever have taken. It was a beautiful, simple moment in his life, and I think that is why everyone is in love with this photograph!
