Finding the time to entertain the kids during bad weather and decorate for the holidays? Ha. Good one.
If you’ve got little ones running around, intricate crafts not getting knocked about might be too much to ask for, so finding fun, child-proof projects that won’t get glitter everywhere can get difficult. So, this project might be perfect in every way. Crayons, making a mess, and ending up with a pretty decoration? There’s no better way to spend a rainy afternoon!
It start by gluing crayons (sans paper) to the top of a pumpkin (or gourd, or mason jar, or plastic pumpkin, or…well, you get the idea!) and letting it dry for a bit. Arrange them in any color combination. If you’re using an orange pumpkin, shades of red and brown and yellow might look wonderful! If you’re going for a winter theme, red and green and white (and if you can find those gold crayons, even better!) will cover a dark gourd nicely.
Start melting the crayons with a hair dryer and use the heat to direct the wax. Have it drip straight down or melt it at an angle. Place your craft on some newspaper – the wax will get everywhere. The result? A cute piece of art that doubles as a holiday decoration! It’s messy, it’s fun, and most importantly, it’s a project that doesn’t mind if you “color outside of the lines.” Mix colors and textures…and they make great heartfelt gifts!
