“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a well-known phrase has been repeated for years, but pretty soon we might replace that “apple” with “wine!” While there are a few studies that show wine has health benefits and can improve your brain function, these studies also emphasize that “1 glass” does not mean “1 bottle!” I will admit, even if some of these studies showed that a glass of wine every night did none of these things, I would still go ahead and relax with my nice glass of Merlot!
1. It can freshen your breath!
Drinking red wine can reduce the bacteria in your mouth responsible for bad breath! While it has a significantly high calorie count than a stick of gum, it is definitely a much more enjoyable experience! Get rid of those bad bacteria with wine that acts as a mouthwash!
2. White wine can help with allergies!
Certain types like Sauvignon Blanc are low in histamines and can relieve those allergy symptoms. Seriously! We take anti-histamines when we feel that familiar pressure in our sinuses, but a glass of white wine can help relieve those symptoms!
3. Help your heart!
Wine contains antioxidants that can also help to prevent heart and can lower those bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and prevent blood clots as a result. (One 8oz. glass a day – not the whole bottle!)
4. Help your cholesterol levels!
While wine will lower those bad cholesterol levels (LDL), it will also help raise those good cholesterol levels (HDL)! This is due to the polyphenol antioxidants in whine that help lower LDL levels.
5. It may help improve your memory!
Wine helps to prevent blood clots and reduce vessel inflammation which means it can help you retain your memory! The research isn’t concrete on this fact, but multiple studies have shown moderate improvement in women who drank a glass of wine a day as opposed to others. Hey, it can’t hurt, right?
6. It can boost your immune system!
According to this study from the UK, drinking a glass of wine every day can reduce the risk of infection by 11%! Why? Because flavan-3-ols can ward off certain bacteria and possibly prevent food poisoning caused by salmonella.
7. It can help keep your bones strong!
Women who drink a class of wine sometimes have higher bone mass than those that do not because alcohol can boost estrogen levels which also slows the body’s destruction of old bone. Wine also has phytochemicals which will also benefit bones.
8. Wine can help you lose weight!
This study found that one glass of red wine could be similar to one hour of exercise. Wait, WHAT?! The lead researcher on the study found that resveratrol would “enhance exercise training and performance.” So what he’s really saying is that if you’re already working out, it can help you lose weight. Hey, that’s good enough for me.
You know, even if none of these benefits existed, there’s nothing quite like that perfect glass of wine to relax after a long day! Hey, if it freshens my breath and helps my bones, all the more reason to pour that nightly glass! If it turns out that it helps in other ways as well, I’ll take it! If not, well…wine certainly is a great alternative to beer and alcohol.
