Kathy and Brandon Gunn live peacefully in Michigan and have been married for 9 years. Unlike many married couples, they still have one unopened wedding gift sitting in the back of their closet from Kathy’s great Aunt Alison. They hadn’t opened the package because it had a note on the front:
Do not open until 1st disagreement!”
In respect for Aunt Alison, they kept true to her stipulation. Obviously, they have had disagreements and arguments through their 9 years of marriage, but never one big enough to warrant sitting down and opening the box together. But one night after the kids had gone to bed, the couple was deciding on a wedding gift to give to mutual friends who would be married soon…and Kathy unexpectedly remembered the gift from Aunt Alison. They had never opened it because it would have felt like some sort of “failure” to do so.
The box came with several items. A wad of cash for Kathy, telling her to “Go get a pizza, shrimp, or something you both like. Get a ‘bath’ ready.” And for Brandon, “Go get flowers and a bottle of wine.” It came with a kit for a romantic bath including soap, lotion, and bubbles, a crystal vase for flowers and two crystal wine glasses.
Our marriage strengthened as we became best friends, partners, and teammates. Today, we decided to open that box, because I finally had a realization. I realized that the tools for creating and maintaining a strong, healthy marriage were never within that box – they were within us.” Kathy said.
Is this the perfect wedding gift for a newly married couple? Aunt Alison had the right idea.
