Clean Your Oven With 2 Ingredients And NO SCRUBBING! Yes, Seriously.

Cleaning the oven was a huge ordeal when I was a kid. I remember mom blocking off an entire Saturday morning to scrub the oven free of grease, grime, and food that had been baked on so many times over that it was just a lump of blackened gunk. Sometimes she would use a spatula to scrape the food off, and sometimes she would use the flat edge of a butter knife. One thing that I always knew was to steer clear of the kitchen. Cleaning the oven put mom in a sour mood, and now that I have a home of my own, I can totally relate. Cleaning the oven? No fun.

So let’s make this as easy as possible! You need two things:

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar

Okay, maybe a third thing:

  • 15 minutes

Step 1: Depending on how big your oven is, you can alter how much you actually need to use. For me, 1/2 a cup of baking soda is enough to cover my entire oven (including the door). Pour some baking soda into a bowl and grab a glass of lemonade. You deserve a break after all of that hard work. Alright. Ready for the next step?

Step 2: You’ll have to wait for the bubbles to die down, but add just enough white vinegar for the baking soda to turn into a light paste. Phew. We’re almost done. Working up a sweat, yet?

Step 3: After you’re done cooling off from all of this hard work, spread the paste over any gunk, grime, or grease currently living in your oven. You can put this paste on the window, on the grates, on the oven walls, and on the bottom under the coils – or if you have a gas oven, just avoid the holes for the flames – just lay it on thick over any gunk that you can tell will be very stubborn.

Step 4: Let it sit for 15 – 20 minutes. Use this time to catch your breath, check Facebook, or just lie on the couch because hey, you deserve a break.

Step 5: Use a paper towel, and old wash cloth, or a sponge to wipe away the baking soda mixture. At this point it should be completely dried. The grime and grease will lift right off and you shouldn’t have to scrub a thing.

If there is still somehow gunk that is stubbornly clinging to the oven floor for dear life, you can either put more paste on top and wait another 15 minutes, scrub it away with a damp sponge, or ignore it like I do and continue about my day because honestly, a small spot of gunk doesn’t bother me like it would bother my mother. Hey, to each their own, right?

The best way to avoid having to ever clean your oven is so easy: every time you use it, come back to it shortly after it has cooled down and wipe every part down with a damp towel. The grease and leftover food will be fresh enough that it will just wipe away with very little effort.
