People drive across the Main Street Bridge over the Great Miami River every day, but when bus driver Damone Hudson realized that this time there was a woman standing on the ledge, he knew that he had to stop his bus. He could tell that the situation was serious, so he did the only thing that came to mind…he offered her a hug!
Surveillance footage from inside of the bus is usually used to protect the driver and ensure the safety of other passengers, but on this day, it captured an incredible moment. His bus was full of people, but he didn’t care. He urged the distressed woman to come back onto the bridge and just tried to be honest with her.
Ma’am, you look like you’re having a bad day, you know. Can I give you a hug?”
He says that he wasn’t trying to be heroic; he saw someone in pain and wanted to make a connection. He didn’t know if it would help. If anything, it may have shocked her into jumping quicker, but he couldn’t just keep driving. The police were called and they were able to take over the situation, allowing Hudson to continue driving his bus route.
Everyone’s going through something. Even if you are, just reach out and try to touch someone, even if it’s in a small way,” Hudson said.
You never know who needs that small act of kindness.
