An 85-year-old grandmother knew that she would be leaving this world soon, but she also knew that her descendants were expecting a rather large payout upon her death. The woman, unnamed, had amassed a rather large fortune of just around $1 million…but she would rather burn it than see it pass to her “ungrateful” heirs. But instead of donating the money or giving it away to strangers, she decided to physically destroy it!
When she passed away in her retirement home, it was discovered that she had spent her time physically shredding and tearing up her life’s savings along with her record books.
The damage of the money in the woman’s property is not a criminal matter, so we have not begun any investigation,” state prosecutor Erich Habitzl said about the incident.
But her family wasn’t going to give up easily. They took their concerns (and the shredded records) to the country’s central bank who reassured them that it would all work out in the end.
If the family could not only prove the origins of the money, but also produced the shreds of remaining money, it could be replaced by the bank.
“If we didn’t pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people,” Friedrich Hammerschmidt, a representative of the bank, added.
Many people are learning from this grandma’s mistake! If you don’t want your heirs to waste your fortune, just donate it to a worthy cause instead.
