When Lamar Austin took off work to be with his wife while she gave birth to their firstborn son, his job told him that he was “terminated” for missing work. You can find the details of the beginning of this story by clicking here, but as it turns out, local businesses were not too thrilled with how this army veteran and father was being treated.
But when the story broke, people from around the world thought that it was ridiculous. How could companies get away with this type of behavior? They hadn’t actually broken any laws by firing him, but it was a crummy thing to do. Thousands of strangers agreed and banded together to raise money to help the family out while he searched for a new job.
They ended up raising over $10,000 in just a few days to help the family of six until dad could get a new job.
Out of all the offers he has received, Austin says that the one he really wants is an apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Concord. The offer, sent via email, invited him to apply, and he hopes that he’ll get the job.
In he meantime, he says that he isn’t going to remove the bracelet that he received from the emergency room. He wants to wear it as a reminder of what happened that day. Family is more important than anything, and he plans to keep it on until it falls off.
