People beg on the streets for a number of reasons. Some beg while they are traveling from one city to the next, and some beg only while they search for a job. But some people beg on the streets because they don’t have any other choice. Those are the people who need our help the most. Hopefully the man in this story was able to get the help that he so desperately needed…until then, he changed a lot of people’s lives.
A blind man sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.”
There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind man. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.
The beggar recognized his footsteps and asked, “Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”
The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way.”
What he had written was: “Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.”
The signs said the same thing, but the perspective was shifted. Instead of thinking, “oh, he’s blind, how sad for him,” people were now thinking, “he can’t see what I can see, what if it were me?” The sign implied that people were lucky not to be in his shoes. Suddenly, they were able to live with a little bit less, emptying their pockets of extra coins. Their donations wouldn’t give him his sight back, but they might be able to make his life just a little bit more comfortable.
