One day, a Sikh man was driving alongside a canal when he noticed a strange gathering of men near the edge. He wasn’t in a hurry and so pulled his car over and stopped to see what all the fuss was about. It turns out, a dog was being swept away by the strong current and was growing visibly tired of treading water.
The men were all watching, but no one was doing anything to help the poor creature…but he had an idea. He began to unwind the fabric of his turban, and the people around him were shocked. One of the five articles of faith in Sikhism is wearing a turban. He is only allowed to remove it at home or while bathing, but here he was out in public taking it off.
He used the inner lining to wrap around the dog’s body and used the long stretch of fabric to anchor himself by giving it to the men above to hold.
The dog was frightened and struggled away from him, but eventually, the man was able to drag the dog to safety. The dog was shaking, so he fed the dog a few crackers that he had in his car and let him go.
Other people have said that he disrespected his faith, but “what was important at that point was to save the animal’s life.” Some might not have gone against their religion to rescue the animal, apparently. But respecting life is important, and this man understood.
