What is a frustrated parent to do when their child starts to throw a temper tantrum? Different parents have different ways of approaching these outbursts, and unfortunately there is no “right” way to deal with them because each child has their own unique behavior and reacts to discipline in different ways. What worked for me when my children had a tantrum in public might not work for someone else’s child. One thing we can all agree on? We just want them to stop!
These tantrums can happen anywhere for a multitude of reasons. The most common cause that I’ve experienced is a combination of hunger, a lack of sleep (missing naptime, anyone?!) and simply not understanding what is going on in the world around them. This woman has it right. Sometimes it does just take one kind gesture from a stranger to stop a tirade in its tracks. I may have said the same thing to my own kid a thousand times, but as soon as a stranger says the exact same thing, suddenly the world makes sense.
Hey, maybe this won’t work for other children, but for this one kid, on this one flight, for just a little while, it was the answer that these parents needed! Good thinking.
