When this photo went viral, people weren’t sure what to think. Is it sanitary for those dogs to be on those couches? What about fleas? Are they bringing pests into the cafe? People eat there, won’t it start to smell like ‘dog?’ The exhausted stray dogs wander into this cafe after the bar closes each night and curl up anywhere: the couches, the floor, the chairs, the benches…anywhere that there was room. But the truth is that this cafe in Greece opens its doors on purpose to let in these cold, stray dogs – especially in the winter!
The cafe is called Hott Spott, and the local strays know that they will have a place to sleep every night if they show up after closing time. Since the middle of July, the cafe has allowed the dogs to sleep safely overnight and have no plans to kick the dogs out into the cold.
In the city there are many dogs. When the bar closes each night, the dogs come and sleep here. We don’t have a problem.” A waiter said.
But the stray dog situation is handled much differently in Greece. Strays are spayed and neutered, vaccinated, collared, microchipped, and ultimately cared for by the entire community. It lessens the chances of breeding more strays, spreading diseases, and eliminates euthanasia because it is a healthy alternative for everyone.
In Greece, a stray dog is simply everyone’s dog.
