The photo was originally posted without context or her permission with a horrible caption, insinuating that this mother was being “lazy.”
I fear the day that technology will take on our humanity. .. the world will be populated by a generation of idiots. – Albert Einstein” he wrote.
The photo shows Molly Lensing, a mother of three, on her phone while her baby stretches out on a blanket placed at her feet. The photo went viral, and when Lensing realized that the photo existed, she was heartbroken. The picture had been shared without context or a chance for her to explain, and instead found that hundreds of thousands of strangers had been discussing her “mothering skills” without any input from her.
Lensing has now come forward to share her side, and parents everywhere realized that many times, they had been in her exact situation and have said that they would have done the exact same thing.
Her daughter was only 2 months old at the time and had been traveling in her carrier or in Lensing’s arms for most of the journey. After their flights had been disrupted and re-booked and cancelled multiple times, she had been at the airport for over 20 hours with the newborn. She was exhausted, and her baby needed to stretch. While she took a break from holding the baby, she was texting her family to try and sort out travel arrangements (with baby safely at her feet on top of a clean blanket).
Suddenly, thousands of people were condemning her and she feared that her job as a pediatric nurse on the labor and delivery floor would be jeopardized. Fortunately, that never happened, and she has decided to speak out against mom-shaming online.
Now, other parents are doing their part. Every time the photograph is shared, they set the record straight for her and hope that people will stop snapping candid pictures of tired moms without consent.
