We go through a lot to keep our homes safe. We install security cameras, alarms that call the police and a special company whenever there is suspicious activity, and sometimes even put metal bars along our doors and windows to deter any would-be criminals. Having your hard-earned possessions stolen is a terrible thing, and when another person doesn’t respect your hard work, your property, and your things, it can really shake up how you go about your daily life.
My husband and I were dressed and ready to go out for a lovely evening at the theater. We were leaving a bit early so that we could have dinner before, and I was nervous about leaving our house empty at night.
Having been burgled in the past, we turned on a ‘night light’ and the answering machine, then put the cat in the backyard to deter any would-be criminals.
When our cab arrived, we walked out our front door and our rather tubby cat scooted between our legs inside, then ran up the stairs. She hates being left outside, but she can’t stay in the house without one of us present because she tears at the furniture and tries to eat the fish. My husband ran inside to retrieve her and put her in the back yard again.
I didn’t want the taxi driver to know our house was going to be empty all evening, I explained to him that my husband would be out momentarily as he was just bidding goodnight to my mother. A few minutes later he got into the cab all hot and bothered, and said (to my growing horror and amusement) as the cab pulled away:
“Sorry it took so long but the idiot was hiding under the bed again! I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off down the hall so I grabbed her by the neck and wrapped her in a blanket so she wouldn’t scratch me like she did last time. But it worked! I hauled her down the stairs and threw her into the backyard….she had better not poop in the vegetable garden again.”
The silence in the taxi was deafening.
I understand wanting to protect your home, but her husband’s comments just made everything so incredibly awkward! I hope that they tried to explain what had actually happened, but if I were that taxi driver…I doubt that I would have believed anything they had to say after he said THAT! I hope they didn’t get into too much trouble! Funny!
