One year ago, Rachel Carpenter told her daughter ‘no.’ This year, she said ‘yes.’ She never could have predicted the drastic changes their lives would undergo in just a few short months, but the reason why she changed her mind will bring tears to your eyes.
Children dyeing their hair is becoming more and more simple. Bleach and hair dye is cheaper than it used to be, and with color options that span the entire rainbow, children are able to express themselves in a fun new way. Most parents don’t have a problem with it because over time, it’ll just grow out.
But when Rachel’s daughter asked for pink hair, mom said no. It just seemed too…”out there.”
Then, disaster struck. A tragic accident at her daughter’s summer camp left the girl with burns on 70% of her body and caused her to spend weeks in the hospital. For the longest time, Rachel didn’t know if her daughter would survive the accident, and it put a new perspective on her entire life.
So, this summer, when her daughter once again asked if she could dye her hair pink? Mom immediately said ‘yes.’
That experience taught me you never know how much time you have left, with anyone. So say yes more often, and don’t care if anyone thinks your child with pink hair is ridiculous!” Rachel wrote.
While parents eagerly jumped into the discussion to either support her or condemn her, she doesn’t care. At the end of the day, her daughter is alive, happy, and able to express herself in a way that doesn’t hurt anyone.
And that is a beautiful thing.
