Marleen B. came home after work one day and found this heartbreaking letter taped to her front door. In shaky handwriting, her 90-year-old neighbor from down the block was hoping to make some new friends. She was incredibly lonely and just wanted someone to talk to.
Would you consider to become my friend. I’m 90 years old- live alone. All my friends have passed away. I’m so lonesome and scared. Please I pray for someone.” She wrote.
Marleen knew that there was only one thing to do after receiving this letter – Marleen baked cupcakes and took them to visit her neighbor down the street! They sat down to talk. Her name is Wanda, and recently, one of her sons died of cancer a year ago. The other two live far away and don’t visit her often. Her friends have all passed on…and she found herself needing to talk to someone.
She’s on oxygen and has congestive heart failure, osteoporosis, among other ailments.” Marleen wrote.
That means Wanda can’t really leave the house without a lot of preparation. Marleen wanted to share the story to remind others that they should check on their own elderly neighbors as well. It’s great that so many people are sharing her story, but there are thousands and thousands of people just like Wanda who could do with a few cupcakes and a bit of friendly conversation.
