Sam Klein wanted to do something special for his friend, Emily Pomeranz, after she entered hospice for what would be the last time. In just 50 short years, she had battled cancer three times, but this pancreatic cancer had gotten the best of her, and friends and family were going out of their way to say farewell in heartfelt and meaningful ways. Emily had touched all of their lives in more ways than they could count, and they simply wanted to give back.
When Sam visited her, he asked if she wanted anything. She wanted “A Cleveland Indians hat,” she told him. He brought it the next day and they began reminiscing about their favorite things from Cleveland.
I wish I could have one more Tommy’s mocha milkshake,” she admitted.
Sam was sad. They both know that she could travel to get one…but he had an idea.
He emailed the owner and explained what was happening, and asked if there was any way possible to get a Tommy’s mocha milkshake over 375 miles. Sam wasn’t sure what would happen…but a few days later, Tommy Fello, the owner, called to tell him that they would come up with a solution.
It would cost him $173, but it would be worth it.
Sure enough, after a little research on shipping and two trips to the UPS office, he shipped a carefully packed Tommy’s mocha shake to Emily. This was a huge surprise. She was thrilled. She shared it with her family. She talked about it for days and days. She shared the story with her friends back in Cleveland and here in the D.C. area. It was something that made everyone smile. A woman’s request for one last milkshake from her favorite restaurant. Wish granted! Sadly, Emily passed away last week. She leaves behind a treasure trove of memories; a legacy of laughter, joy and caring; grieving family and friends. But, she was able to fulfill her wish of one last Tommy’s milkshake thanks to the caring and good heartedness of Tommy at Tommy’s. So, my friends, if you are in Cleveland Heights, or anywhere near there, please stop in at Coventry, order one of those incredible milkshakes and ask for Tommy (he is the one cooking in the middle of the restaurant) and say, ‘This one is for Emily. Thank you for sending one to her.’ “
The heartwarming tale has made Tommy’s an overnight sensation – but judging from the owner’s response, he deserves every bit of praise for his incredible actions.
