When these new students arrived at their dorms, they were met with a heartfelt, hand written note from their housekeeper. What they quickly realized was that this was no ordinary “maid.”
The purpose of this letter is to let you know a little bit about me, your housekeeper.
I’m from Croatia. I have been living in the U.S. for 20 years now. I’m married and have two children, a 28-year-old daughter and a 22-year-old son. “
She added a few anecdotes about her family and her past, emphasizing the importance of hard work and determination when it came to realizing your dreams. She wanted them to know who she was, which many people who have careers in sanitation applauded her for.
Too many times, people ignore the sanitation staff and don’t pick up after themselves, failing to remember that the maids, janitors, and repair techs are people who deserve respect.
This will be my 19th year working here. I put a lot of effort in making this place a comfortable home for learning and living.
I know this is your first year at this school. Everything is new and difficult. But what I learned in my life is that nothing is impossible and nothing is promised.
My family came here 20 years ago with only $100 in out pocket, but here we are happy and blessed.
Don’t hesitate to come up and talk to me, I’m here to help you feel more at home and I’ll do my best to help.
I wish you a successful and clean year! 🙂 “
By offering her friendship, she forced the new students, most of whom are 18 years old, to see her as someone to respect. No clogging toilets, no leaving hair in the shower drains, and no leaving food out to grow moldy. If they wouldn’t do it at home, they shouldn’t do it at school.
The letter was soon taken down as the student who posted it forgot to edit out the housekeeper’s personal information, but the sentiment behind it weren’t lost on many. The beauty of respecting the people who work behind the scenes went viral, and the edited letter is just too sweet!
