Paula was at the mall doing a bit of shopping when she, along with several other shoppers, found a line at the escalator. It wasn’t a very busy day, but when she looked up to see what the hold up was, she pulled out her phone to take this picture and post the story on Facebook for her friends and family. The older gentleman had stopped just shy of the elevator and seemed to be trying to gather his courage to step on. While everyone else was simply waiting for the man to make up his mind, a young man pushed to the front of the line and offered his arm.
Can I help you on, sir?” The man asked.
The older man looked over and tried to quietly explain that the last time he had gotten onto an escalator, he had gotten stuck. He was scared.
The younger man made eye contact and told him that he’d be alright – he wouldn’t leave until they made it down.
The older man nodded and together they stepped on to ride the escalator down. Everyone around them was polite and patient, but this young man stepped up and made a difference.
In about an hour, the evening news will air and we’ll be reminded of division, political mud-slinging, shootings and other heartaches. But today, violence, age, politics and other social lines were blurred and one person simply helped another. I wanted to hug both of them. Whoever this young man is, YOUR FAMILY RAISED YOU RIGHT! THANK YOU!” She wrote.
Her heartfelt thanks went viral, and it encouraged others to keep their eyes open for ways that they too might help in their own communities.
